Acknowledgments

The true measure of a man’s contribution to the discourse of his age is just how impossible he makes it for those who follow to say something without falling back on him. I humbly thank C.S. Lewis for giving me a good starting point for many of my own thoughts. "Well done thou good and faithful servant." (Matthew 25:23).

I also wish to acknowledge the encouragement and help of Miss Adaobi T. Nwaubani, whose kind criticism helped me to see the final form of this book.

My statement of faith is in the full text below.

I believe reading the scriptures does more for a Christian than simply reciting a creed or a statment of faith. But some may need a summary of what I am putting forth here. Here is my:

Statement of Faith.

I believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

I believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who is of one Being with them, co-equal and co-eternal, and that He has spoken through the Prophets.

I believe that by true belief in the Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, for the forgiveness of sins, the believer is spiritually baptized into the Holy Spirit, who indwells and seals the believer for eternal salvation, and makes the believer a spiritual member of the spiritual Body of Christ on earth, the church.

I look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the age to come.

The Trees Are Mystics
by Lindsy Stephenson Jr.

The trees are mystics.
They have life spans as we do.
But they have set themselves to praying.
What do they pray?
Thank you, thank you,
Thank you, thank you,
Thank you, thank you,
Thank you, thank you.
And on and on and on.
The trees are mystics,
With life spans longer than yours or mine.
But they have set themselves to praying.
Do they have names for each other?
Likely not.
Continous praying requires
Continuous attention.
Green, Greener, Greenest
Or stripped to the limbs,
They have live spans like yours and mine.
But it is better to wearout than rust out.
